Sendai Station is the central city of the Tohoku region and is used by many local residents and tourists. There are many sightseeing spots and gourmet restaurants around the station.

First of all, administrative offices such as Miyagi Prefectural Government and Sendai City Hall are concentrated around the station. In addition, there is an abundance of public transportation to Sendai City, including subways, buses, and cabs. There are many stores and restaurants in the station building, where you can enjoy local delicacies and souvenirs.

There are many sightseeing spots in Sendai City. Aoba Joshi Park, located in front of the Miyagi Prefectural Government Office, is a representative example. This park contains the ruins of Sendai Castle, and from the ruins of the castle, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Sendai City. Also located in front of the Miyagi Prefectural Government Office is the Sendai City Museum, where visitors can learn about local history and culture.

In addition, there are family-friendly spots in Sendai City, such as the Sendai Uminomori Aquarium and Sendai Zoo. There are also tourist attractions such as “Matsushima” and “Yamagata Zao” in the vicinity of Sendai City, which can be visited on a day trip.

Sendai is also famous for its “beef tongue. There are many beef tongue restaurants around Sendai Station, so please enjoy the local taste. Zunda rice cakes and sasa-kamaboko, Sendai’s specialty, are also recommended.

Sendai Morning Market (仙台朝市)

Sendai Asaichi is a permanent weekday daytime market located in Chuo, Aoba-ku, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. Adjacent to Sendai Station, the Sendai Station West Bus Pool, and other public transportation terminals in Sendai, the market is located in a valley of buildings in the city center, but still retains the atmosphere of an old market, making it a popular tourist destination.

Both sides of “Asaichi-dori” are lined with mid- and low-rise buildings, and on the street side of their first floors are rows of street stores with no walls and awnings out. In addition, an aisle extends behind the street-side stores, and some buildings have other stores as tenants on the first floor of the building.

The Sendai morning market has about 70 stores, including fresh fish, produce, meat, and other fresh food stores; specialty stores of beans and grains; specialty stores of processed foods such as pickles, dried foods, fish cakes, and tofu; Korean food ingredients stores; delicatessen shops; dumpling shops; restaurants; ramen shops; and flower arrangement stores.

AER Observation Terrace (AER(アエル) 展望テラス)

AER (AER) is a 31-story building (145.5m) located on the north side of the west exit of JR East Sendai Station in Aoba-ku, Sendai City. It has become a landmark in the city center of Sendai.

The first to fourth floors are commercial facilities, the fifth to seventh floors are Sendai City facilities, and the eighth to 30th floors are office buildings. The commercial floors are occupied by tenants such as Maruzen and Uniqlo. The top 31st floor has a free observation terrace (open 10:30 – 20:00).

Sendai Station Stained Glass “Hymn of the Forest” (仙台駅ステンドグラス『杜の讃歌』)

The stained glass window was installed at the entrance of Sendai Station in 1978, just before the opening of the Shinkansen bullet train service, and has become a familiar symbol of Sendai Station. It is the work of Zenjiro Chikaoka, a painter who studied in Europe as a foreign exchange student, and was created in hopes for the development of the Tohoku region. The vivid colors of the motifs, which include Tanabata festival decorations, a statue of Date Masamune mounted on a horse, and the Godaido Hall in Matsushima, are eye-catching and representative of the Miyagi region.

Kotodai Park (勾当台公園)

Near the park are the Sendai City Hall, Aoba Ward Office, Miyagi Prefectural Government Office, and many other government offices. The park is located in the heart of the city, just a few minutes’ walk from the Ichibancho shopping district and Kokubuncho, the busiest shopping district in Tohoku. The park has flowerbeds, a plaza, an outdoor music hall, a waterfall, stores, cafes, and restrooms, and is crowded with workers on weekdays during their lunch break and with parents and children spreading out their lunch boxes on weekends. In addition, various events such as exhibitions and sales of tourist products from cities, towns, and villages in and outside of the prefecture are held at the civic plaza in the park. Eight sculptures by famous sculptors, including the “Peace Memorial Statue,” the “Tanikaze Statue,” and the “Plaza of Time,” have been installed in the park, and visitors can also enjoy the sculptures.
