Located in the Tohoku region of Japan, Mizusawa Esashi Station is one of the stations on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line and is located in the southern part of Iwate Prefecture. The area offers many natural beauties and historical sights that are attractive to foreign tourists.

Sightseeing spots near the station include the following.

First, there is Hachimantai National Park. Located about 30 minutes by car from Mizusawa Esashi Station, it is known as one of the best nature reserves in the Tohoku region. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature in all four seasons, especially in autumn when the autumn leaves are beautiful and attract many tourists.

Oshu Space and Astronomy Museum (奥州宇宙遊学館)

The Oshu Space Museum is a social education facility operated by Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture. Located on the grounds of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s Mizusawa VLBI Observatory, the building is a reconstruction and reproduction of the old main building of the Latitude Observatory (now the Mizusawa VLBI Observatory).

Takano Choei Memorial Hall (高野長英記念館)

The Takano Choei Memorial Museum was established in 1971 to commemorate the achievements of local pioneer Takano Choei. A physician and Dutch scholar, Takano Choei wrote many books, including Japan’s first book on physiology, “Iryugen Kyuryo”, “Nimono Kou”, and “Yumemono Monogatari”, and the Takano Choei Memorial Museum has a collection of about 330 items including translations, books, letters, and personal belongings. Esashi Fujiwara Heritage Park (歴史公園えさし藤原の郷)

Esashi Fujiwara no Sato is a Heian Period theme park located in Esashi, Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture. It is known as a filming location for NHK’s historical drama “Taiga Drama”.

The park was built near the ruins of Toyodakan, where the ancestors of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, Fujiwara no Tsunekiyo and Kiyohira, the first generation of the Oshu Fujiwara clan who founded Hiraizumi, lived. It is the only theme park in Japan that recreates Heian architecture, and is also called “Michinoku no Hollywood” (Hollywood in Michinoku) because it has been the setting for many TV dramas.

Mizusawa Park (水沢公園)

Mizusawa Park, which is said to have been designed by Minomushi Sanjin in 1878, is home to approximately 500 cherry trees in full bloom, including old higan cherry trees designated as a natural monument by Iwate Prefecture.

The “Mizusawa Park Cherry Blossom Festival” is held in the park from early to late April every year, and visitors can enjoy the cherry blossoms and the cherry blossom viewing at the Hanami Restaurant Center and other stalls. When the cherry blossoms come to an end, the park is covered with colorful azalea blossoms, offering a different view of the park.

Tateyamashiseki Park (館山史跡公園)

This is the site of a castle that was the residence of a powerful family that ruled this region from ancient times. It is said to have been the site of a fortress built by Fujiwara no Tsuneakiyo and his son Kiyohira at the end of the Heian period (794-1185). An octagonal hall building and Niseiin Temple (where Buddhist statues are preserved) were erected as a facility to honor the great deeds of the father and son, Tsuneakiyo and Kiyohira. Niseiin Temple is usually closed and open on January 1, May 3-5, and August 13-16 each year. Visitors can enjoy the seasonal scenery of cherry blossoms, hydrangeas, and maple trees.
