Furukawa Station is a Tohoku Shinkansen station located in Furukawa City in southern Miyagi Prefecture. Furukawa City is famous for its ayu (sweetfish), and the area is rich in natural scenery and historical buildings.

There are many popular tourist spots around the station. The Furukawa City Tourist Association is located in front of the station and provides tourist information, maps, and rental bicycles.

One of Furukawa City’s most popular tourist attractions is Iwanuma Hikawa Shrine in Iwanuma City. Furukawa City and Iwanuma City are adjacent to each other and can be reached in about 30 minutes by car. Iwanuma Hikawa Shrine is one of the largest shrines in the Tohoku region, with a beautiful garden and many nationally designated important cultural properties on its grounds.

In addition, Senkan-dani Onsen, located about 10 minutes by car from the station, is a popular hot spring resort with hot spring water flowing from the source. The surrounding area is rich in nature, and outdoor activities such as mountain stream fishing and trekking can be enjoyed.

Also located in Furukawa City are the ruins of Furukawa Castle, which prospered as a castle town of the Nanbu clan. Furukawa Castle was built in the early Edo period (1603-1867), and the main castle, the second castle, the third castle, and earthen mounds still remain.

The city is also home to Furukawa lacquerware, a traditional craft, and visitors can tour the city’s lacquerware workshops. Furthermore, the city offers a wide variety of gourmet foods such as grilled sweetfish, charbroiled sweetfish, and sasa-kamaboko (fish cake), allowing visitors to taste local ingredients.

This space is open to all genres and ages, including painting, sculpture, calligraphy, photography, and crafts. It is an atmospheric space with an exhibition room in a sake cellar, and is a popular place for viewing various art exhibitions and for citizens to present their creative activities.

Sakuzō Yoshino Memorial Hall (吉野作造記念館)

This memorial museum introduces the life and achievements of Yoshino Sakuzo, a pioneer of Taisho democracy born in Furukawa, in an easy-to-understand manner. Visitors can approach the real image of Yoshino Sakuzo from various angles.

In the permanent exhibition room, Yoshino Sakuzo’s achievements and human image are introduced in five sections, including “Prologue,” “Yoshino Sakuzo, a Man of Academism,” and “Yoshino Sakuzo, a Man of Journalism. Using a screen, the museum also shows a video that depicts the life of Yoshino Sakuzo, an advocate of civilian principles, in a way that even a child can understand.

Michinoku Furukawa: Food Storehouse Kamuro (みちのく古川 食の蔵 醸室(かむろ))

Inside the 10 or so renovated sake breweries of various sizes built in the Edo period (1603-1868), you will find a variety of unique restaurants and sundry stores.

The “Odae no Hashi” bridge is the original landscape of the people of the Furukawa area, and was even written about in the Manyoshu (a Japanese anthology of poetry) in ancient times. Shoku-no-Kura Jomuro is a commercial facility that was created by renovating the historic building of the Hashihei Shuzo Brewery, which has stood at the foot of the Odae-no-Bashi Bridge since the late Edo period (Kansei 2). In addition to the business of each tenant, events are held throughout the year, such as the “Kamagami Shrine Festival” enshrined on the premises. At the Osaki City Tourism and Product Center “DOZO,” local souvenirs, processed goods, and sake are sold.

Arao Park (荒雄公園)

One of the most famous cherry blossom viewing spots in the Furukawa area of Osaki City, 131 cherry trees are in full bloom in mid-April, and the area is crowded with cherry blossom viewers throughout the day. A cherry blossom festival is also held around the same time. The Yoshino Sakizo Memorial Museum, a pioneer of Taisho demogracy, and Shounkaku, the most authentic tea ceremony garden in northern Japan, are located next door.
