Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum (伝国の杜(米沢市上杉博物館・置賜文化ホール))

Yonezawa city Uesugi Museum is a municipal museum located in Denkoku no Mori, a cultural facility in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture.

The Uesugi Museum has exhibits mainly related to the Uesugi clan, including Takayama Uesugi, as well as exhibits related to the Date clan and the burial mounds in the city, and other pre-Edo period exhibits.

Miyasaka Kokokan (宮坂考古館)

Miyasaka Archaeological Museum is a registered museum in Yamagata Prefecture, located in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture. The operating entity is the Miyasaka Archaeological Museum Foundation. The museum houses over 700 items of archaeological, historical, and folklore materials mainly from the Yonezawa area, collected by the former director Miyasaka Zensuke, who established the museum. The collection includes cultural properties related to the Yonezawa clan.

Keishoden (Uesugi Shrine Museum) (稽照殿(上杉神社))

Uesugi Shrine is located in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture. Located in Matsugamisaki Park (the site of Yonezawa Castle), the shrine is dedicated to Kenshin Uesugi. It is one of the shrines enshrining the clan founder that were popular from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period.

Matsugamisaki Park, with its water-filled moat, is a reminder of Yonezawa Castle in the past. It is an attractive spot for history buffs, dotted with historical sites of the Uesugi family, including Kenshin Uesugi, who is said to be the most powerful military commander in the Warring States period, and Takayama Uesugi, known for his words, “Do it and you will do it, and nothing will go wrong. Uesugi Shrine, which is said to bring good fortune and fulfill various wishes in honor of Kenshin Uesugi, and Uesugi Shrine Kishoden, which exhibits many important cultural assets, mainly artifacts of the Uesugi family, are also located on the premises. There is also a stone monument marking the birthplace of Date Masamune, the famous Dokuganryu, or Dokugan Dragon.

The area is also famous for its cherry blossoms, and usually in mid to late April, 200 cherry trees bloom along the water moat. The contrast between the cherry blossoms reflected on the surface of the moat and the red bridge across the moat is elegant and photogenic. In late October and early November, the cherry blossoms turn brilliantly red, delighting the eyes of visitors.

Near the park, there is “Matsumisaki Shrine” dedicated to Takayama Uesugi and others, and “Yonezawa Castle Historical Park” where you can enjoy local delicacies and a wide variety of souvenirs.

Rinsenji Temple (春日山林泉寺)

Kasugayama Rinsenji Temple in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, is the family temple of the Uesugi family and Naoe Kanetsugu. The temple contains the graves of the Uesugi family’s wives, branch lords, and many of their vassals.
