Takahata Station (高畠駅)

Station Type: Train station

Takahata Station on the Yamagata Shinkansen is located in the northern part of Yamagata Prefecture and is the second station from the end of the Shinkansen line. There are many historical sights and hot spring resorts in the surrounding area, offering many seasonal attractions.

Near the station is the Tengendai Cave, one of the three largest limestone caves in Japan. The caves maintain a constant temperature and humidity throughout the year, and visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of the formations and light. The caves are also illuminated, creating a mysterious atmosphere.

Another attraction is the Kawarayu Hot Springs in Takahata Town. The spring is a sulfur spring, and its benefits include neuralgia, muscular pain, and skin diseases. The hot spring is free-flowing and has an open-air bath and sauna for a relaxing soak.

Around Takabatake Station, there are souvenir shops selling local specialties and restaurants where you can enjoy dishes made from local vegetables. In particular, the Yamagata beef steaks are excellent, and if you have never had them, you should definitely give them a try.

In front of the station is JR East’s Acan Primo Takahata. Here, you can easily purchase fresh local produce, mainly vegetables, fruits, and rice produced in Takahata. In addition, visitors can enjoy local sweets and coffee at the café space.

There are many attractive sightseeing spots around Takabatake Station, such as natural spots, hot spring resorts, and local gourmet foods. We encourage you to take the time to explore.

Site of Takahata Station (旧高畠駅)

Tourist Area Type: Tourist attraction

The former Takabatake Station is a former station building on the Takabatake Line. The station building, made of local specialty Takabatake stone, is a rarity, and the preserved trains, tracks, and tools used in those days are nostalgic. The wooden station building was rebuilt in 1934.

Takahata Line – In the 1900s and 1930s, Hasegawa Silk (Takemori), Ryouu Silk Mill (Takahata), and many other silk mills started operation in Takahata, and in April 1933, Nukanome Station on the Ou Line was opened. As people became more enthusiastic about the promotion of local industry, they naturally became more concerned about the transportation of products. It was against this backdrop that the Takahata Railway was born. Until the prewar period, the Takahata Railroad was actively used to transport ore from the Yuhara Mine in Shichigajuku-cho, Miyagi Prefecture and the Nijusaka and Kanehara Mines in Niwajuku, lumber from Niwajuku and Takahata, charcoal, cattle, dairy products, stone, yarn from Takahata and Yashiro, rice, and fruits such as western pears, apples and grapes, and also served as a transportation system for people.
