Shinjō Castle remains (新庄城跡)

Tourist Area Type: Castle

Shinjo Castle was a Japanese castle (medieval castle) located in Shinjo, Mogami County, Dewa Province (Hazen Province), which is now Horibatamachi, Shinjo City, Yamagata Prefecture. It is also known as Numata Castle or Unuma Castle.

Shinjo Castle was a flat castle built in 1625 by Tozawa Masamori in Horibatamachi, present-day Shinjo City, Yamagata Prefecture, as the home of the Shinjo clan’s 60,000 koku (later 68,200 koku). The castle consists of two small, de-maru-like circles arranged in parallel on the south side of the main circle, with the outer circle surrounded by the san-no-maru circle. The water for the moats of the Honmaru, Ninomaru, and Minomaru was drawn from the Sasunokawa River, which flows to the north of the castle. The present Horibatamachi, on the opposite side of the San-no-maru moat (second moat), was a samurai residence where retainers and other retainers lived. Tozawa Masamori, who joined the shogunate after the Mogami clan was exiled, initially entered Mamuro Castle (Salmon-no-jo), but due to its cramped space and the inconvenience of a mountain castle, he requested the shogunate to build a castle here.

Today, most of the buildings of Shinjo Castle have been lost, and the Tozawa Shrine, Gokoku Shrine, Inari Shrine, and Tenma Shrine are located on the main castle site. Of these, Tenma Shrine is the clan deity of the Tozawa clan that founded the castle, and is the only structure still standing from the feudal domain era, and is designated as a prefectural cultural property (designated on August 25, 1988 (Showa 63)). The remains of the San-no-maru moat can also be seen near the Shinjo City Senior Citizen Welfare Center and the Shinjo City Health Center. The ruins of the castle, including the ruins of Honmaru and Ninomaru, are open to the public as Mogami Park, where there is Shinjiike, a pond designed by Shinjo native Yoshinobu Orishita. It is also known as one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in the Mogami region, and is the site of the “Kadoyaki Festival,” with the best viewing time around April 20 every year. In summer, the Shinjo Festival, a festival associated with Tenma Shrine, is held here.
