Shin-Hakodate Hokuto Station is a Shinkansen station located in Hokuto, Hakodate, Hokkaido. The area surrounding the station is popular among foreign tourists for its nature, hot springs, and food culture.

Around the station are the Ishikura Coast of Hokuto City, with its blue sea and beautiful scenery, and the Old Hokuto City area. In the Old Hokuto City area, old-fashioned buildings remain, and there are restaurants and souvenir shops run by local people. There is also a market where visitors can taste fresh seafood.

About a 30-minute drive from the station is Hakodate City. Hakodate is famous for its historical buildings, night views, hot springs, and seafood cuisine, and attracts many foreign tourists. The night view from Mount Hakodate is especially famous and attracts many tourists. In addition, Hakodate City still retains a charming townscape, including Motomachi and the Goryokaku area.

The view from the panoramic observatory is a popular spot.

The observatory is located at an elevation of 560 meters and offers a panoramic view of not only Mount Hakodate, but also the Ono Plain, Yokotsu Mountain Range, Eruption Bay, Onuma Swamp, and Komagatake. In good weather, the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture, the Muroran area, and Mt. Yotei can also be seen.

Kingenyamahokame Temple (金言山法亀寺)

Hogei-ji Temple is said to have its origin in 1849, when the 15th master Kaneko Hinoh of Junkoji Temple in Hakodate was granted permission to establish Hogei-an in Higashishita-cho, Ono-mura, at the request of a pious Buddhist monk, Nakamura Kinbei.

There is a weeping cherry tree in the precincts of this temple, which blooms beautifully every spring. The weeping cherry tree, also known as ito-zakura, belongs to the rose family and is a cherry tree with a vertically split trunk and drooping branches. It is a deciduous tree that is appreciated as a garden tree or bonsai. It is a variant of the Uba higan, and is distinguished from other varieties by its deep red color, which is called benihigan. The waterfall cherry tree in Miharu, Fukushima Prefecture, is a natural treasure, and the cherry tree in Gion, Kyoto, is also a weeping cherry. It is very rare to see weeping cherry trees this large in Hokkaido, and some visitors come from far away to see them because they cannot be found anywhere else in the area.

Trappist Dai Monastery (トラピスト大修道院)

Trappist monastery is a monastery of the Cistercian Order of Strict Cistercians (Trappists), a Catholic monastic order, and in Japan is mainly known as the Trappist Abbey of Our Lady of the Lighthouse, located in Mitsuishi (Watashima-Tobetsu), Hokuto, Hokkaido. It is located in Mitsuishi, Watashima-Tobetsu.

It was first established in 1894 when Bishop A. Berlioz, then Rector of the Diocese of Hakodate, approached the Chancellor of the Trappist Association about the possibility of founding a monastery in Japan. The congregation donated a field in Tobetsu, a suburb of Hakodate, and nine friars arrived in Japan at the end of October 1896. On November 21 of the same year, the feast of the consecration of the Virgin, Bishop Berlioz presided over the opening ceremony of the monastery, officially establishing the monastery in ecclesiastical law. The new monastery was named the Monastery of Our Lady of the Lighthouse in honor of the nearby Kattoshi Lighthouse. It is sometimes called Tobetsu Monastery because of its location.

Butter, butter candies and cookies made at Tobetsu Convent and Oita Convent are famous and well received.

The interior of the monastery is open for tours. However, advance application is required, and only men are allowed to enter.
