Kurikomakogen Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line is located on the border between Aomori and Akita Prefectures and is surrounded by rich nature. The station building has a wooden design inspired by nature, which blends in with the beautiful scenery.

The station is surrounded by natural spots such as Kurikoma Kogen and Tagokura Dam. Kurikoma Kogen is a plateau at an altitude of over 1,000 meters and offers the beauty of nature in each of the four seasons. In spring, the flowers blooming on the plateau are magnificent, and in fall, the autumn leaves are spectacular. In winter, there are ski resorts where visitors can enjoy skiing and snowboarding.

Tagokura Dam, one of the largest gravity-fed concrete dams in Japan, is located about 20 minutes by car from the station. Around the dam lake, walking paths and observation decks have been developed, offering spectacular views.

There are also other activities such as hot springs, fishing spots, and campgrounds near the station, making it a fun place for families, couples, and nature lovers.

Carillon Park (カリヨン公園)

Tourist Area Type: Memorial park

The park is located in Shin-Kumagaya, Shibahime, Kurihara City, Miyagi Prefecture. Centered around a large waterwheel 10 meters in diameter, cherry blossoms, kobushi (Japanese pepper), and fragrant olive trees are planted. Kurikoma in the distance, visitors can enjoy the changes of the four seasons while listening to the sound of the waterwheel.

It is only a 1-minute walk from Kurikomakogen Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line, and is a place where children and adults alike can take a short stroll and visit.

Miyagi Prefecture Izunuma-Uchinuma Sanctuary Center (宮城県伊豆沼・内沼サンクチュアリセンター)

The Miyagi Prefecture Izunuma-Uchinuma Sanctuary Center is a facility that introduces the natural, humanistic, and social environment of the swamps, etc. On the first floor, a 16-meter aerial photo of the Izunuma-Uchinuma area is placed on the floor. On the second floor, visitors can observe birds and plants with live cameras and field scopes, and learn about the history of Izunuma and Uchinuma, the relationship between people and nature, and the Foundation’s latest research findings in an easy-to-understand manner with a variety of graphics and specimens on display. The area of Izunuma and Uchinuma is about 1,000 square meters.

Izunuma (伊豆沼)

Izunuma/Uchinuma is a lowland lake with an area of approximately 4 square kilometers, where the daily maximum temperature exceeds 4°C even in winter, and since it never freezes, many waterfowl can overwinter. A variety of aquatic plants cover the surface of the lake, creating a rich plant environment and nurturing a diverse biota, including dragonflies, fish, and waterfowl.

Kuriden Museum (くりでんミュージアム)

In addition to exhibits of valuable materials on the Kurihara Rural Railway, the museum has a diorama of Kuriden running along the railroad line, an operation simulator that allows visitors to experience the actual operation of a train in the driver’s seat, and a mini-theater that tells the history of Kuriden in a dramatic fashion. In addition, the locomotive depot and repair depot, which are the remains of architectural techniques from the Taisho and Showa periods, exhibit rolling stock from the period of operation and machine tools that were actually used in the past.

Hosokura Mine Park (細倉マインパーク)

Hosokura Mine Park is a theme park surrounded by nature using the ruins of the Hosokura Mine in Uguisuzawa, Kurihara City, Miyagi Prefecture.

Visitors can actually walk through the tunnels of the Hosokura Mine and learn about the workings of the mine in those days. Outside, there is a 555-meter slider park surrounded by the great outdoors.
