Koriyama Station, one of the stations on Japan’s Tohoku Shinkansen Line, is located in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture. There are many nature and historical sights in the surrounding area, making it an attractive area for tourists.

First, we recommend a visit to the Koriyama Civic Hall, which is located within walking distance from the station. This hall is a landmark of Koriyama City, with a gorgeous main hall and theater inside, where various cultural events are held. Also not to be missed is the Azuma Sogo Building, the tallest building in Koriyama. From the observatory, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Koriyama city.

Next, visit Lake Inawashiro, a 30-minute drive away. This lake is characterized by its beautiful blue water and the abundant nature that surrounds it, and in the summer you can enjoy camping and BBQs by the lake. In addition, the “Byakkotai War Graves,” said to be the only one of its kind in Japan, is located on the lakeside and is worth a visit for those interested in history.

Also recommended is “Michi no Eki Koriyama Onsen-kyo” (Roadside Station Koriyama Hot Spring Resort), located about 20 minutes by car from the station. Here, visitors can enjoy hot springs using the source of Azuma Onsen, a hot spring in Koriyama City. It also offers a wide variety of souvenirs and gourmet foods for rest and shopping.

Koriyama City Fureai Science Museum space Park (郡山市ふれあい科学館 スペースパーク)

Koriyama City Fureai Science Center is a space-themed science museum located in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture. Its nickname is Space Park. It is one of the largest planetariums in Japan, with a dome 23 meters in diameter and Super-HELIOS manufactured by Goto Optical Laboratory.

It is located on the 20th – 23rd floors of Big Eye, next to the west exit of Koriyama Station. The planetarium is 104.25 meters above the ground, and has been certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s highest planetarium from the ground.

Koriyama City Museum of Art (郡山市立美術館)

Koriyama City Museum of Art is located in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture.

The museum’s collection includes British art by Turner, Japanese modern art by Kishida Ryusei, and paintings and sculptures by artists associated with Koriyama such as Yukimura. The museum also holds special exhibitions and overseas exhibitions 5-6 times a year.

21st Century Memorial Park Hayama no Mori (21世紀記念公園 麓山の杜)

The 21st Century Memorial Park Furuyama Forest is an urban park located in Furuyama, Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture.

The Tongari Fureai Kan, built near the entrance on the south side, houses the management office, a hands-on learning room where various events are held, a hall, and a cafe. On the west side, there is a Japanese garden, and within the garden, there are “Foothills Villa” and “Mujin-an”, which can be used for tea ceremony and flower arrangement. Matcha (powdered green tea) is served at Furu Sanso. In the garden, there are “flower beds of the four seasons” and “flower beds of the forest,” where seasonal flowers can be seen, and the garden is known as a tulip viewing spot. There is also a “Stone Playground” with playground equipment made of giant stones and a stone ball rotating fountain, and a “Water Theater” with a fountain.

Koriyama Culture Park (郡山カルチャーパーク)

Koriyama Culture Park is a leisure facility located in Azeki-cho, Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture. The park includes Dreamland (amusement park), a swimming pool, and a culture center. The amusement park includes a Ferris wheel and a scream machine.

Kaiseizan Park (開成山公園)

Kaiseizan Park is an urban park (general park) located in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture. Located in front of Koriyama City Hall, 1-5 Kaisei, Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture, the park is one of the symbols of Koriyama City. The total area is approximately 30 hectares.

The park is deeply related to the Azumi pioneer settlements and has many cherry trees planted during the pioneer settlements, making it one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in the prefecture and one of the 100 best historical parks in Japan. The park is also home to the Kaiseiyama Sports Complex and the Koriyama Gymnasium, which is located adjacent to the park, making it a center for sports in Fukushima Prefecture, along with Fukushima City’s Azuma Sports Park.
