Ichinoseki Station (一ノ関駅)

Station Type: Transport interchange

Ichinoseki Station, located in the Tohoku region of Japan, is one of the stations on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line and is situated on the border between Iwate and Miyagi prefectures. Around Ichinoseki Station, there are many natural beauties and historical sights that are attractive to foreign tourists.

Among the sightseeing spots around Ichinoseki Station, I would like to recommend Mount Iwate. Mount Iwate is located about 40 minutes by car from Ichinoseki City and is a beautiful mountain, one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan. Mt. Iwate is famous for its beautiful nature that can be enjoyed in all four seasons. Visitors can enjoy mountain cherry blossoms in spring, hiking in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and skiing in winter all year round.

There are also many historical places of interest in the Ichinoseki Station area. For example, in Ichinoseki City, there are the ruins of Ichinoseki Castle, which was built in the Edo period (1603-1868). From the castle ruins, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Ichinoseki city and the surrounding mountains. There is also a temple called “Ishiketsuji Temple” and a large park called “Ishideji Park.

There are also many hot spring resorts around Ichinoseki Station. In Ichinoseki City, there is a hot spring resort called “Ichinoseki Onsen,” where visitors can take a day trip or stay overnight. There is also a hot spring resort called “Hanamaki Onsen” about 30 minutes away by car. This is also a popular destination for tourists, offering one-day bathing and lodging.

Tsuriyama Park (釣山公園)

Tourist Area Type: Park

Ichinoseki, where Tsuriyama Park is located, prospered as a castle town of Tamura 30,000 goku. The vestiges of this history remain in this area, and there are monuments to many of its predecessors, including Kogoro Takahira, Junma Nomura, and Idate Nagata. The park is a popular place for cherry blossoms in the spring and autumn leaves in the fall, and is well known to the public as a place where families can enjoy strolling. During the cherry blossom season, the park is lit up with lights.

Geibikei (猊鼻渓舟下り)

Tourist Area Type: Tourist attraction

Geibikei is a ravine along the Sunatetsu River in Higashiyama-cho, Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture. It is 2 kilometers long, with a series of limestone cliffs more than 50 meters high, dotted with oddly shaped rocks and cascading waterfalls, as well as stalactite caves in the surrounding area. The name comes from the fact that the eroded stalactites near the canyon’s exit resemble the nose of a lion (geigi means lion).

It is said to be the Yabakei of the east. It is a popular sightseeing spot, where visitors can enjoy a boat ride while listening to the boatman’s chants of “Geibi no Oiwake,” or the “Geibi no Oiwake” song. It is also a rare sightseeing spot among river tourism spots in Japan, where passengers go up the river in a rowing boat. It is also famous for its wisteria as well as for its autumn leaves.

Genbikei Gorge (厳美渓)

Tourist Area Type: Scenic spot

Genbikei is a valley in the middle reaches of the Iwai River in Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture. It is fed by Mt. Kurikoma (Mt. Sugawa). It was designated as a national scenic beauty and natural monument in 1927.

Genbikei Gorge was formed by the erosion of dacitic tuff deposited by the eruption of Mount Kurikoma and eroded by the current of the Iwai River. The river has a variety of expressions such as strange rocks, waterfalls, and abysses, and the development of potholes is especially noticeable at the bottom of the river. Potholes are especially noticeable at the bottom of the river, where gravels (pebbles) that flowed through the gaps between boulders formed an arc in the water flow, cutting the bedrock into a spherical shape, which is also valuable geologically.

Urashima Park (浦しま公園)

Tourist Area Type: Garden

This park is located on the site of the former guest house of the Tamura family, lords of the Ichinoseki domain. The pure Japanese-style garden with ponds, bridges, and stone lanterns is an oasis where visitors can fully enjoy nature, with seasonal flowers and trees such as wild tea, wild cherry, and nanten.

Sakenominzokubunka Museum (酒の民俗文化博物館)

Tourist Area Type: Museum

This facility introduces traditional sake brewing. The largest earthen storehouse in Tohoku (the former brewing storehouse) has been reconstructed into a museum where visitors can learn about the sake brewing process. There is also a miniature literature museum displaying manuscripts and books of literary figures (such as Hisashi Inoue and Toson Shimazaki) with connections to Sehrei-no-ichi and Ichinoseki. Visitors can experience local culture in the storehouse.
