Tendo Station is one of the stations on the Yamagata Shinkansen Line and is located in Tendo City, Yamagata Prefecture. The area around the station is popular among many tourists for its historic shrines, temples, and beautiful nature.

Near the station is Tendoji Temple, which is designated as a national important cultural property. This historic temple was built in the Nara period (710-794) and has a beautiful garden and many cultural assets on display. Tendo City is also home to the Junisho Shrine, known for its ginkgo tree, which is over 1,000 years old and grows wild. This shrine attracts many tourists during the fall foliage season.

A short distance from the station is Yamadera Temple, a symbol of Tendo City. Yamadera is a temple of Shugendo, a symbol of Japanese mountain worship, and is located in a mountainous area rich in nature. This temple is located about 20 minutes by bus from the station and attracts many tourists.

There are also hot spring resorts and areas of beautiful nature near the station. About a 30-minute drive from the station is Yudenyama Hot Springs. The Zao mountain range is one of the most famous mountain resorts in Japan and offers beautiful scenery from season to season.

Tendo City Shogi Museum (天童市将棋資料館)

Tendo Park (Maizuru Park) (天童公園(舞鶴山))

Maizuruyama is a mountain located in Tendo City, Yamagata Prefecture. The JR Ou Main Line (Yamagata Shinkansen) runs along the western side of the mountain, and the National Route 13 Yamagata Bypass runs north-south on the eastern side. The area is the site of Tendo Castle and part of Tendo Park. It is known for its cherry blossoms, and a human shogi (Japanese chess) tournament is held there every April.

Dewazakura Museum (出羽桜美術館)

The Dewazakura Museum of Art opened in 1988 with the donation of ceramics and crafts collected by Seijiro Nakano III over a long period of time. The museum is housed in the former residence of Seijiro III, a traditional Japanese house built in the late Meiji period, and the wooden main building with a tiled roof and storehouse are open to the public as exhibition rooms.

The main collection includes ceramics and crafts from the Old Korean, Silla, Koryo, and Yi Dynasty periods, as well as Shinichi Saito’s “Gojo, Meiji Yoshiwara Hosomikki,” calligraphy by modern writers, crafts related to cherry blossoms, and the six oldest kilns in Japan.
