Shichinohe Shrine (七戸神明宮)

Tourist Area Type: Shinto shrine

Shichinohe Shinmyougu Shrine was founded in Shinmachi on March 5, 1396. It was moved to Minamimachi in September 1756. On September 22, 1881, the shrine was moved to its present location, and has flourished as the general deity of the Shichinohe area on the castle ruins.

The deity of Shinmei-gu Shrine is Ohhimemute-no-mikoto, the god of agriculture and learning. The ancestors worshipped him, believing that he would give them the power to create and nurture everything, and this belief has continued to the present day. The 36th lord of the Nanbu domain, Toshitaka, devoted himself to the sound upbringing of youth to prevent what is now called juvenile delinquency, encouraged young people to perform kagura, composed songs of filial piety and other dances, designated dancers as one of the important events of the Shichinohe domain, had them practice under the supervision of government officials, and dedicated them to the Shinmei-gu Grand Festival. The dance was temporarily discontinued, but was revived in 1876 (Meiji 9) and continues to be performed today. The Oyako Odori dance is designated as an intangible cultural asset of the town.

Oirase Gorge (奥入瀬渓流)

Tourist Area Type: Scenic spot

Oirase Keiryu is a mountain stream of the Oirase River stretching about 14 km from Nenokuchi on the east shore of Lake Towada in Towada City, Aomori Prefecture, northeast to Yakeyama (Towada City, Horyo (Oaza) Yakeyama). It belongs to Towada-Hachimantai National Park. It is designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument by the national government.

It is a U-shaped valley formed by the collapse of Lake Towada, a double caldera lake. National Route 102 runs along the stream, and a nature trail has been developed along it, attracting many tourists during the season of fresh green and autumn leaves.

The upper reaches of the lake (Lake Towada, Konokuchi to Kumoi no Stream) is also known as the “Waterfall Road” because of the succession of waterfalls, including Choshi Great Falls (7 m high and 20 m wide), also known as “Fish Stop Falls” because fish migrating upstream cannot reach Lake Towada, and Kudan Falls, with a 15 m drop.

The middle part of the river (from Kumoi no nagare to near the entrance of the Oirase Bypass) is a series of scenic spots, including Ashura no nagare and Kumoi no taki. The lower reaches of Ishigado and the right bank of Shiragin-no Stream are covered with forests.

The river becomes wider in the downstream area (from the entrance of the Oirase Bypass to the Yakeyama area), but forests of beech and horse chestnut trees spread along the Sobe and Kise. In the Yakiyama area downstream, there is the Oirase Keiryu-kan, which exhibits materials on the Oirase Keiryu and sells local products.

Tenno Jinja Shinto shrine (天王神社)

Tourist Area Type: Shinto shrine

It is said that the shrine was invited to this area around the first year of Oei (1394), and is a rare combination of shrines from various oriental regions. The Tenno-Kagura, which was introduced around 1751, is a valuable local performing art with its graceful dances and beautiful music.

Within the shrine grounds, there is an azalea garden created by painter Kamiizumi Kayo, where about 500 azaleas, including a large tree said to be more than 300 years old, bloom in spring. Visitors can enjoy azalea viewing from various angles, such as strolling through the azalea tunnel or from the observatory in Kashiwaba Park (ruins of Shichinohe Castle) across the street. The azalea is also illuminated at night from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., creating a fantastic atmosphere.
