Kitakami Station, located in the Tohoku region of Japan, is one of the stations on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line and is located in the northern part of Iwate Prefecture. The area has many natural and historical sights that are attractive to foreign tourists.

The following are some of the tourist attractions near the station.

First, there is Hanamaki Onsen-kyo. Located about 30 minutes by car from Kitakami Station, it is one of the representative hot spring resorts in the Tohoku region. The abundant quality of the springs and the scenic beauty of the area attract many foreign tourists.

Next, there is Hiraizumi. About an hour’s drive from Kitakami Station, Hiraizumi is a tourist spot with a historical townscape that flourished in the late Heian Period. It is registered as a World Heritage site and attracts many foreign tourists.

In addition, the Kitakami urban area is home to beautiful natural features such as the Ono River and the Kitakami River. Along these rivers, there are many places famous for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, and visitors can enjoy different beautiful scenery depending on the season.

Kitakami Tenshochi Park (北上市立公園展勝地)

Kitakami Municipal Park Exhibition Site is a city park located in Kitakami City, Iwate Prefecture. The park is located along the Kitakami River and is known for its cherry blossoms. The cherry trees were planted in 1920 as part of a cherry planting project, and today there are approximately 10,000 cherry trees and 100,000 azalea plants on an area of 29,300 square meters. It is recognized by the Japan Cherry Blossom Society as one of the 100 best cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan, and is one of the “three best cherry blossom viewing spots in Michinoku” along with Hirosaki in Aomori Prefecture and Kakunodate in Akita Prefecture. Someiyoshino cherry trees more than 80 years old line the streets for about 2 km. The area was named Jinsenkachi in honor of the beautiful view from Jingaoka.

Michinoku Folk Village (みちのく民俗村)

Michinoku Folk Village is an outdoor museum located in Kitakami City, Iwate Prefecture.

More than 20 old buildings from the Edo period to the Taisho period that existed in the Kitakami River basin have been systematically relocated to a 70,000 square meter hill and valley in the mountainside of Jenshoji, and restored, including the village environment of the feudal domain period, and are open to the public. According to the layout of the buildings, the museum is composed of four zones: the Folk Village Introduction Zone, the Southern Date Domain Boundary Zone, the Kitakami River Basin Old Houses Zone, and the Jomon Period and Ancient Ruins Zone, with the Kitakami Municipal Museum and Kitakami Archaeological Cultural Properties Center located in a separate zone.

Kitakami Night Song Monument (北上夜曲の碑)

Kitakami Yakkyoku (Kitakami Night Song) is a 1941 song. This monument is said to be one of the few in the country with lyrics and stave notation inscribed in the author’s handwriting.

Kitakami Yakkyoku is sung fondly throughout Japan. It is a sweet and sad song of youth, and was born in February 1941, right in the midst of the heyday of military song marches. It is said that the song was sung secretly from mouth to mouth, and by the mid-1950s, it was widely sung at singing cafes throughout Japan.

Kawakami City Museum (北上市立博物館)

Tourist Area Type: Local history museum

Kitakami Municipal Museum is located adjacent to the Michinoku Folk Village in Kitakami City, Iwate Prefecture. Under the theme of “The Kitakami River and the people who lived in its basin,” the museum exhibits information on nature, geology, history, and folklore. The museum exhibits and explains six historical events that are characteristic of Kitakami City.

The park is home to cultural and academic facilities such as the Japan Modern Poetry Literature Museum, the first museum in Japan dedicated to poetry, and haiku poet Yamaguchi Seison’s house (weed garden).
