It is said that the Oyama Goten was built following the auspicious precedent of the “Oyama Review” held just before the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Tokugawa Ieyasu died on April 17, 1616, and his remains were interred the following year at Nikko Tosho-sha Shrine (later Nikko Toshogu Shrine), where the first anniversary of his death was held. Since then, Nikko has been a sacred place for the Tokugawa Shoguns. The shoguns visited Nikko Shrine 19 times, including 10 times by the third shogun, Iemitsu. The Oyama Goten was a very strictly constructed building, with a moat around it, double earthen mounds, and as many as 16 guard posts within the grounds.
