Aomori Museum of Art (青森県立美術館)

Tourist Area Type: Modern art museum

Aomori Prefectural Art Museum is an institution in Aomori Prefecture. It is located in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture, next to the Sannai-Maruyama Ruins.
Aomori Prefecture’s Culture and Tourism Department’s Preparatory Bureau for the Prefectural Art Museum has been planning the opening of the museum, and in September 2005, a preview was held for architectural professionals, attracting 300 people from all over the country. Jun Aoki, Aomori native Yoshitomo Nara, and Shingo Mimura, Governor of Aomori Prefecture, held a “Symposium to Commemorate the Completion” and the Aomori Museum of Art was opened to the public, selected by lottery, for a visit.
Architect Jun Aoki was selected as the architect of the building as a result of the International Architectural Design Competition competition, in which Toyo Ito served as the jury chairman. The building has two floors above ground and two floors underground, and was designed to integrate with the Sannai-Maruyama site by covering a large trench of earth with an uneven white structure, similar to an excavation site. The space between the upward and downward trenches is used as the “soil exhibition room,” and the rest of the building is designed to be used as an “outside exhibition room” or “creation yard,” so that the entire building can be used as a museum.
