A train veiw from JR Hokkaido

Okhotsk express train

The Okhotsk-go train connects Sapporo Station and Abashiri Station in Hokkaido. It takes passengers around the area facing the Sea of Okhotsk, where they can enjoy the beautiful coastline and abundant natural scenery.

Riders of the Okhotsk-go can get off the train at any of the stations along the way and explore the surrounding area. For example, at Hamatombetsu Station, there is an observatory from which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Sea of Okhotsk. At Monbetsu Station, you can visit Monbetsu City Sakurayama Park, which is known as the earliest place in Hokkaido where cherry blossoms bloom.

And the biggest attraction of the Okhotsk-go is the area around Abashiri Station, its terminus. Abashiri faces the Sea of Okhotsk, where you can see “drift ice,” a sea that never freezes even in freezing temperatures. The Abashiri City Museum also has exhibits on the history of Abashiri Prison and the Abashiri Prison, the only one designated as a National Treasure in Hokkaido.

The Okhotsk-go is popular as a train trip that allows you to experience the nature and culture unique to Hokkaido. We encourage you to take the Okhotsk-go and enjoy the charms of Hokkaido as one of your travel options in Hokkaido.
